The art of natural indigo dyeing was first brought to Japan from China around 900 A.D. The popularization of this art in the Tokushima region can be attributed to Lord Hachisuka, who discovered the perfect climate for indigo cultivation in the Yoshino River Basin. Using a unique fermentation process with Indigofera leaves to create Sukumo paste, this traditional method of dyeing has become synonymous with the prefecture. Not only do the resulting garments showcase a beautiful color, but they also serve as a natural insect repellent due to the dye's plant-based nature. These garments have even been recognized as intangible cultural treasures of Japan, with skilled artisans hand-dyeing each piece individually in approximately 5 dye cycles to achieve the perfect light hues. This same dye process can be seen on several Studio pieces such as their Awa-Ai Heavy Flannel
